My personal journey began in the 1990s, while I was in college and beginning to accept myself as a gay man. At a time when being openly gay often felt uncertain, I began searching for places where I could experience greater acceptance, understanding, and belonging.
Over the years, I participated in retreats and personal-growth experiences that helped me understand myself more deeply. Yet I eventually realized that insight alone wasn’t enough. I could understand my patterns and where they came from—and still feel that something deeper was waiting to change.
Discovering body-based and experiential work, and ultimately Core Energetics, became a turning point. I began to understand how our histories live not only in our thoughts, but also in our bodies, emotions, relationships, and the ways we protect ourselves. This work invited me to move beyond simply talking about change to actually experiencing it.
That experience inspired my own professional journey and eventually the creation of Energetic Awakenings. Today, I draw from Core Energetics, Imago Relationships, coaching, energy practices, and experiential learning to help others create greater connection, authenticity, and choice in their lives.
My journey has also taught me that growth isn’t about becoming someone different. It’s about becoming more fully ourselves—recognizing old patterns, reconnecting with parts of ourselves we may have left behind, and discovering new ways to live and relate.
Today, I am happily married to the love of my life, Bentley deBardelaben-Phillips. Our relationship continues to teach me about love, vulnerability, communication, and growing together. Bentley also facilitates couples work alongside me, bringing both our professional experience and our lived experience as a couple to the work we share with others.
My life looks very different from that young college student searching for acceptance. That journey—from acceptance to authenticity, connection, love, and purpose—continues to shape who I am and the work I do.
It is also why I believe so deeply in our capacity for meaningful change.
