Pride – Help or Hindrance?

As we head into 2017, we start to assess our own lives and decide whether we are happy with our current position in life. Have you achieved your goals? Are you happy in your current career? Are you getting along well without any help? Of all the questions, the final one may raise a few eyebrows and, in all likelihood, you will answer ‘yes’ without so much as a second thought. Why? Because we have a certain level of pride. However, is this pride a big help in life or could it actually be considered a hindrance?

Before we head into the main focal point of what we are discussing, we should state that having pride in your work and personal life is beneficial because it can give confidence and boost self-value. Despite this, there are also negatives to pride because we would rather suffer alone than ask for help when we truly need it. Whether it is regarding work or personal matters, we believe that asking for help is a sign of ‘weakness’. In fact, it should be seen as a sign of strength because you are recognizing that you need assistance to pull through a certain task. Ultimately, we are all unique and can handle different levels of pressure; there is nothing wrong with asking for help because you could return the favor in the future.

Furthermore, there are other occasions where pride plays a role too because it can be seen when deciding to take a risk. Again, this could be in your personal life or at work but we don’t seem to take risks because we focus on the damage that could occur to our pride. Instead, we should be focusing on the positives without worrying what other people think.

If you were to look at the people at the top of your chosen field, you can almost guarantee that they didn’t let pride get in the way of their success. Firstly, because they were willing to let their pride take a hit if they happened to fail. Secondly, because they were willing to ask for help whenever it was necessary. Ultimately, we need to always remember that one day we will be in a position where we look back at all the decisions we ever made. Will you look back and smile at the times you failed to take a jump because you were worried about pride?

When it comes down to it, we only really learn what we are capable of achieving after we learn to take a risk and put our reputation on the line. If we constantly stay in the comfort zone, we aren’t pushing ourselves and no progress will be made. Rather than wasting time with ‘resolutions’ that normally fail, why not learn to use your pride correctly regardless of the time of year and Live Life Fully?
