Fear is an emotion we all feel sometimes. It comes in many sizes and shapes. Do any of these sound familiar? Fear of failure, fear of intimacy, fear of rejection, fear of commitment, fear of being alone, fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of success.
Fear can become problematic in certain situations. It can be harmful if it is stopping you from doing certain things, like taking risks or pursuing opportunities. The main goal of fear is to stop you from going into danger, however, many times we read situations which are not truly dangerous as such, so our fear can be paralyzing. Not being able to let go of this emotion can severely limit you in your life, because it will guide your actions and prevent you from doing things. Fear can be a toxic influence.
Like other emotions, fear and its effects can be felt in the body. It can be expressed as tension in the body, appearing as muscle blocks. These blocks can be deep. However, these blocks don’t just occur on the physical level, but also on the energetic level. Fear can prevent a free flow of energy.
In the study of Core Energetics there is a series of spiritual lectures called the Pathworks. In lecture 168 the guide states, “You get fear out of your system by recognizing what is behind it and where you hold on in a cramped state, and by letting go of the cramp. Meet the fear head on instead of evading it. Fear is maintained when it is not faced. When you face fear, you can recognize, experience, and alter it according to reality and a more constructive pattern of life.”
Many fears can limit your life – fear of rejection, fear of failure and so on. All these block the energy in the body, which holds these fears. The blocks can affect your behavior and prevent you from fully enjoying life. Often, you are not even aware of how much fear affects your life, as this influence can occur without you being conscious of it.
According to the Pathworks lecture 168, “The only way is to face exactly what you fear, what you want, and where you ungenerously withhold from trusting and risking. That is the only way out of fear. There is no other.” Core Energetics and other somatic therapies which are focused on the body, can help you let go of these fears. By removing the physical blocks and the blocks of energy, you let go and enable a free flow of energy.
The body is closely connected to the emotional state. There are different techniques that can help you – overcome fear in the moment. For instance, a deep and controlled breathing can often help an individual relax and stay in the moment, making decisions not based on fear, but on desire.
